Youth Voice: A Message to Adults
By Billy Barnes
As teens, we're very impressionable. As the adults in our lives, everything that each of you say and do has a large impact on what we say and do and who we become.
To our teachers... If you think about it, teachers and school staff see us as often as our parents and families do, if not more. We don't know each and every adult in our school, but as a student, I am telling you that your words and actions really do matter.
I am sixteen and that is not very old. I can only think of what my life is going to be like. So when I am around positive school staff, I might pick up on something that you do, in hopes that it could make my life good, as well.
My teacher (and coach) has had a very large impact on me not only as a player but as a student as well. On and off-season, he looks out for us, makes sure that we get good grades, and does whatever he can to help us get those grades. If I am in trouble, he finds out very quickly and it is almost like facing another parent. It makes me think just a little more about the things I do before doing them. So, in a lot of ways he helps me get through life and shows me how I can, and hopefully will, help people that I meet and interact with throughout my life.
To families, neighbors, and all adults... I have a lot of other adults in my life that I also consider my assets builders. Along with my family, I have neighbors who let me know they care . . . they know who comes in and out of our driveway. My parents' friends encourage me and let me know that I can go to them when I need advice. At my job, the adults around me treat me just like them. They respect my ideas and this makes me feel like I am worth something.
So, to all the adults in our lives, please think about what you are saying and doing. We are always listening and learning from you. You do make a difference.
Billy Barnes is a student at Suttons Bay High. Billy adapted this essay from an address he made last winter to his school's staff at a seminar on asset building.
